MISSA BREVIS  Zoltán Kodály

Matthew Larkin  CONDUCTOR

Teresa van den Boogaard  ORGAN

In this 50th anniversary year of the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams, we pay homage to that great British composer, and to his Hungarian contemporary, Zoltán Kodály.  Composing on opposite sides of Europe, these men revived the polyphony of Bach and Palestrina, and the great Elizabethans and Jacobeans, and added back the native songs of their people.  On his journeys through Britain, RVW catalogued over 800 English folk songs while Kodály,with Bartok, gathered over 100,000, safeguarding the musical heritage of their countrymen in a war-shattered Europe.  They were ancient moderns; their great Masses offer a fascinating comparison and complement.
